Timaru District will welcome six innovative UK agritech businesses in October as part of the 2026 New Zealand Global Incubator Programme, bringing new technologies and ideas directly to our food and fibre sector.
Venture Timaru was proud to promote Timaru District to the programme and successfully secure a two-day visit as part of the cohort’s Christchurch–Dunedin itinerary.
The businesses are visiting New Zealand through Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, in partnership with Sprout Agritech, to explore the New Zealand market, build partnerships and identify opportunities for investment, pilots and collaboration.
Agritech is a priority for Timaru District, building on the scale and capability of our food and fibre economy. The district contributes 6.2% of New Zealand’s food and fibre exports, with a connected supply chain spanning farming, processing, manufacturing, engineering and logistics.
This provides a strong environment for new technologies to be explored and applied, from innovation on farm through to the businesses that process, manufacture and move our products to market.
The UK innovators will experience this capability first-hand through on-farm visits before heading to the Washdyke Industrial Hub. There, each business will give a one-minute pitch on its technology and innovation to local growers and processors, followed by one-on-one conversations with businesses and industry experts.
While agritech is at the heart of the visit, some of the innovations have applications across adjacent sectors, including infrastructure and renewable energy. This broader relevance reflects the increasingly connected nature of technology, productivity and economic growth.
Improving productivity and helping businesses adopt new technologies will be important to building a resilient, future-fit economy for Timaru District.
International connections such as these can introduce new ideas and capabilities to our existing sectors while also helping open pathways into emerging industries aligned with our Towards 2050 aspirations and economic priorities.
For local businesses, the visit provides an opportunity to see what is being developed internationally, consider how new technologies could be applied to their own operations, and build relationships with potential partners.
For the visiting cohort, it is an opportunity to understand the scale of our food and fibre sector and the wider capability and opportunities within Timaru District.
