Mayor For A Minute
Insights from the Tamariki at the Annual Multicultural Festival
As the diversity in our Timaru district continues to grow, so too does the annual Multicultural Festival, a cherished event that highlights the richness of our community. This year, the festival, hosted by Multicultural Aoraki, was a vibrant celebration of culture, flavour, and connection. It was an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to come together and embrace the diverse backgrounds that make Timaru such a special place to live.
Reflecting on the theme of connection and community, we sought to unlock what makes Timaru a great place through the eyes of our tamariki—the next generation of leaders in our district. Through a special initiative, we gave our young people the opportunity to step into the shoes of a mayor for a minute, allowing them to share what they love most about life in Timaru and, importantly, what they would change or do if they were in charge.
The response was both heartwarming and insightful. It was inspiring to hear the thoughts and ideas of these future leaders, who represent the vibrant, diverse community Timaru is becoming. Across the board, tamariki expressed a deep appreciation for the strong sense of friendship and connection that defines life in our district. They highlighted the importance of community, not just as a place to live, but as a space where people genuinely care for one another.
As we look to the future, these young voices also shared priorities that reflect their awareness of the world around them. Common themes included the need to care for our environment, make living costs more affordable, and create more time for leisure and family outside of work. These priorities align closely with the core goals of the Towards 2050 plan, which is focused on creating a prosperous, sustainable, and connected community that works for everyone.
If they were Mayor of the Timaru District, their focus would be on building a community rooted in care, connection, and balance. The insights shared by our tamariki are a reminder of the values that will guide us as we move forward: community, care, and the well-being of future generations.
Looking Ahead
As Timaru continues to evolve, the Towards 2050 plan offers an exciting opportunity for all residents, including our tamariki, to shape the future of our district. Through initiatives like the annual Multicultural Festival and the Towards 2050 consultation process, we are ensuring that every voice is heard. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a newcomer, your feedback is crucial in helping us create a balanced and sustainable future that works for everyone.
