The need for a forward-thinking plan for Timaru became clear as we began to explore the district’s potential. Our initial findings cantered on the key drivers of economic growth—such as infrastructure, workforce, and economic performance—but we quickly recognized that a successful future isn’t just about numbers. A truly prosperous community is one where every individual’s well-being is prioritized.

Our approach to planning has evolved to embrace a more holistic vision that includes not only economic development, but also social, cultural, and environmental factors that contribute to quality of life. We know that sustainability, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging are just as crucial to our success as economic growth. This is why Towards 2050 is a living, collaborative effort, shaped by the diverse voices of everyone who calls Timaru home.
